GRAPHIC DESIGN • WEB SITE DESIGN

brochures, flyers, leaflets

Printed media advertising is essential to any marketing plan and all designs must reflect the corporate / service's image. As well as giving an overview of a company/business and address details, it is also essential for promoting web sites for more in depth information on what is on offer.

Primarily, the design for promotional printed media needs to be immediately dramatic - i.e. attracts immediate attention: brochures often compete for space in brochure display stands, and it is important that the design stands out. Secondly, design needs to highlight special features of the business and this is done by using graphics, photos and headlines. It can also be important for details to be visible - interested people will read the small text. Address details (phone numbers, email and web addresses) need to be visible and easy to find.

Full colour is always most effective (even when it appears that only a couple of colours have been used) but budget usually determines this. If the print run is large (say over 10,000), the cost variation caused by the number of colours used lessens and full colour becomes economically very viable.

Also, with the advent of full colour digital printing, short runs can also be more economic than one imagines.

The usual size brochure in NZ is an A4 sheet (210 X 297mm) folded into 3 panels (panel size = 210 x 99). This fits conveniently into existing brochure stands. A single flyer can be very economic if it uses a third of an A4 sheet, allowing them to be printed 3-up.

Other common sizes are A5 (half of the A4) and A3 (twice A4 size) folded to A4.
